Book Description:
How you use your free time will make or break your success. The secret? It’s not about working harder or finding more time to do work. It’s about designing the freedom to engage in the high-value work that brings you energy and fulfillment. This is at the heart of the message that has made Dan Martell the world’s most popular SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) coach. Now, in his first book, Buy Back Your Time, he teaches entrepreneurs at every level how to scale their business, fast, while avoiding burnout. Trading money for time—that is, literally buying back free space in your calendar—will give you more financial success than you ever dreamed was possible.
With over two decades of experience as a serial entrepreneur and founder, Dan Martell will teach you the secrets to work less and play more while building an empire. He’ll dig into the practical steps that will allow you to start buying back time immediately, while also developing operating procedures and hiring practices that will ensure rapid and robust growth. And he will teach you how to invest in your newfound time wisely—at work and at home—so you keep building your empire while living your best life.
My Review of Dan Martell's "Buy Back Your Time: Get Unstuck, Reclaim Your Freedom, and Build Your Empire"
“One of the best business books I have read in the last 5 years. A must for every business owner and entrepreneur” – Brent Dowlen
Welcome to another book Review. Guys. Today we’re reviewing “Buy Back Your Time: Get Unstuck, Reclaim Your Freedom and Build Your Empire” or more, most commonly known as just “Buy Back Your Time” by the Dan Martell. Dan Martell is a highly experienced entrepreneur with decades of business experience. If you like business content on YouTube, you probably come across as content.
It’s actually really great. I’m a big fan of his channel and. Subscriber to his YouTube channel as well, which is what led me to buying the book. So that’s where I found it.
I read a lot of business books, guys being a entrepreneur myself, being fairly new to entrepreneurship in the last five years of my life.
I read a lot of books. It’s how I learn things most effectively. So I read a lot of business books and over the years I referred to a lot of business books on my channels because not only do I interview authors, but I also just read a lot on my own for my own business. And this is a next level business book.
Guys, right off the bat, if you’re looking for the short recommendation. Five star Review, like this is a phenomenal book. Now let me put a clause in that this is a phenomenal book for a person who already has a business, or I guess you can use it as well, if to plan your business ahead of time and understand where you want to go ahead of time.
I guess it’d be really good there if you wanna apply it that way as well. Overall this book is aimed at existing business owners or entrepreneurs, but it’ll also give you an insight into how to move forward as you build a business, I guess. So five outta five stars. Guys, if you are into business, if you’re thinking of started business, if you own a business and you’re tighter your business owning you, Read “Buy Back Your Time”
I kid you not. By chapter three, I was on the road. I was listening to the audio book version of it, and by the time I got to chapter three, I actually called a friend of mine who is a business owner. Who is struggling with the fact that his business just consumes his whole life and the business that he built to give him a life now actually takes so much of his time because he has not structured it in a way that gives him the freedom.
The truth is most business owners fall prey to this. Mm-hmm. A lot of people get into business because they don’t wanna work for somebody else. Moreover, they get into business for themselves because they think it will end with them having more time, more financial freedom more control over their lives.
And a business structured well can do that. But unfortunately, for most small business owners, your business owns you. I know very few small business owners that don’t work 12 to 16 hour days every single day of the week to keep their business running. So this by chapter three, I called my good friend.
I’m like, you have to buy this book. He’s like, okay, I’ll, I’ll look. I was like, no, no, no. You have to get a copy of this book. Because him and I had just recently been having a very serious discussion about the situation he’s in, and it struck a nerve instantly for me. I was like, gosh, he needs to read this book.
So those are the initial progressions of it. Let me deconstruct. Step-by-step a little bit more. So I already told you this book is for existing business owners, but it also has benefits for those looking to build a business. ’cause I think it’ll help you structure it better. So that’s the who, the what is the premise of the book, right?
It shouldn’t be really hard for me to cover. I don’t wanna overcomplicate things, but. One of the things Dan Martell teaches both on his YouTube, and I’m assuming in his courses but also in his book, is this concept of buying back your time, which is something that most business owners don’t understand.
The majority of small business owners really are stressed about having the income to take on staff, and so when they do take on staff, it is. Somebody to serve a specific purpose in the company. They’re looking at, oh, I need a graphic designer. Oh, I need a social media manager. Oh, I need a warehouse admin or something like that.
Dan Martell challenges that way of thinking which is a very traditional sense of business, is have a position you need filled. Find the best person for that position. Theorizes and it executes in his own business that the best hires. You don’t hire somebody to fill a specific position as much as you hire somebody to buy back your time as the mind behind the business.
And that’s the entire premise of Buy Back Your Time is when you start taking on staff, the first people you hire are the people who free up you. From your menial day-to-day tasks that you could pay somebody much less than you are worth to do those jobs, right? High powered CEOs rely heavily on their executive assistants.
I think that’s the right term. When my mom was doing it, they were secretaries and that never seemed to offend her, but can never be too careful these days. But. Executive assistants actually have moved past just the traditional role of an office secretary, but Dan Martelll leans heavily on his executive assistant and she handles a great deal of day-to-day things that a lot of us get stuck in.
I can’t tell you how much time of my time is wasted doing tasks, like checking emails, coordinating my calendar. Scheduling guests from my shows doing the background research on some of those guests editing videos, editing audio building social media assets, updating my website. There are a great deal of small things that really as a business grows are not.
Financially equivalent to the value of the CEO or founder who is building the business. I can tell you right off the bat my time would be better spent doing other things. We’re actually looking at possibly my daughter coming on and helping with the company to handle these very things actually, after reading this book because if I’m gonna pay somebody, I’d rather pay her, but.
The concept is very simple. It’s you hire somebody who can do the work that you trust, that you can build a good relationship, who understands the way you do things, but you hire them to do the things that really shouldn’t be spent. You shouldn’t be spending your time as the CEO, as the founder, as the creator on.
You can pay somebody else to do, and they can probably do as good if not better than you do it because that’s not your forte. That’s not your area of genius, and that’s the whole insight behind the whole book is you replace things that detract from your ability to help grow and drive your company.
Those are the people that you need to cover first. Yes, there are things like. Obviously a good accountant or a business lawyer or something like that, that you might need to get, but the most effective way to not be buried by your company is to have people who can handle the day-to-day that keep you from actually growing that company so you’re not bogged down by, I don’t wanna call them menial tasks, because they’re so valuable.
But there’s a reason all good CEOs have gatekeepers to get to them, and it’s because, you know, Elon Musk shouldn’t be worried about answering his email. He should be worried about [00:09:00] the next thing that’s going to move SpaceX forward. Right? Dan Martell is a very successful entrepreneur. He doesn’t need to be worrying about scheduling stuff on his calendar.
Someone else can do that for him. In fact, he has other people who do that For him, he should just be worrying about moving his business and his employee and his company forward. And that’s the premise of the book. Why? Why should you read this? The very sad fact is most small business owners. Get into business for financial freedom and for time freedom and to let them live the lives they wanna live and end up their lives ends up being their business.
I cannot tell you how many small business owners I’ve talked to and how many I’ve known over the years that they were always at the family store. They grew up at the family store. Their kids grew up at the family store. They played at the family store. Their parents were always at the store, one or the other, or both.
And. You know what? Hats off to them for the hard work, but if you want to live your life, right. The reason we get into business, a lot of people get in business. The reason I get into business is I want to be able to capitalize on my time. So not only I can do what I love, but I can also help people. But I don’t lose time with my family.
I don’t lose all the precious years. So if you are a small business owner, this book is really, this is really, really, really for you. You know, if you own a com hardware store, you, you know, your store inside and outside, you know everything you have on your shelves. You know everything you do. But is that going to make your store more money?
Is that going to help your business grow? Is that giving you back your time? If you’re the one who’s always at the counter helping customers, it doesn’t, it doesn’t give you the freedom you wanted from a business. So that’s the why. You should absolutely read it, unless you just wanna spend 17 hours a day on your business.
But even if you do want to spend 17 hours a day on your business. Make those 17 hours, the hours that are profitable, the hours that grow your business, the off the hours that make your business thrive, not the hours that just keep your business open. And that’s the why is because that’s not how you run a business and really make it effectively a great business.
Can’t I recommend this book enough? Like honestly, guys. Out of five years of reading business books and I have shelves full of business books at this point. This book has clicked for me as far as the concepts of how to run a business better than almost anything I’ve ever read. It will absolutely help you take your business in the next level.
It will absolutely help you.
Live the life you want to as a business owner. The concepts behind it are easy. The audio book was highly enjoyable because Dan Martell himself read it, and I’ve told you guys on previous reviews. I love it when authors read the audio book version and for themselves. And so to paint a voice actor to do it, and that’s no shade to the fact that I do voice work or I have some friends who do voice work and read books and stuff like that for a living.
Voice actors, no shade on those guys. I love those guys. But you get so much more out of it when an author reads their own book. There are some visuals in there that I think would be handy to have the hardback copy of or paperback copy of. He also refers to some resources on his website that you can probably go get those from.
So if you’re like me and really love audio books it’s a great audio book. You don’t necessarily have to get the paper back, but you might want to. I don’t know. It’s kind of a personal preference. But guys, five stars. This is a phenomenal business book for anybody who is passionate about. Whether you’re just starting or whether you are, you’ve been in business for years and you just feel like you’re banging your head against the wall, this is a book you need to read.
Yeah, I, I’ve prob I’ve said this, but really it’s, it’s probably the most impactful business book I’ve read in the last five years. So take that for what it’s worth, guys. I hope this helps you out. Check you later.
